Happy Baby Pose (Ananda Balasana)

Happy Baby yoga pose to open the hils

Happy Baby pose is one of those poses that usually makes everyone smile.  It also can feel a little awkward the first few times you do it, so just know that it’s completely normal! But it also feels so good and is a great, gentle way to open up the hips.  This pose can bring out a light, fun energy but is also very effective at relaxing your body and mind.  Give it a try and release your inner child!

Instructions:
Begin lying on your yoga mat

Inhale and hug both knees into your chest

Take hold of the the outer edges of your feet with each hand.

Flex your feet, pointing the soles of the feet towards the ceiling and bring your feet in line with your knees.

Gently press downward on your feet to bring your knees down towards the armpits or floor.

Remain in this pose as long as is comfortable.  You can also gently rock side to side in this pose.

Modifications:
If you cannot comfortably grab the sides of your feet, use a yoga strap wrapped around each foot and gently pull on the strap.  Another option is to grab the backs of the calves instead of the feet.

Benefits:
Relieves stress and promotes relaxation

Gently stretches the low back and helps relieve back pain

Deeply stretches and opens the hips and groin

Stretches the calves

Releases tightness and tension in the neck

Cautions:
Avoid this pose if you have recently had a neck or back injury, or if you are pregnant.
